The Hermitage of San Domenico

A spiritual refuge on the shores of the lake of the same name

Discover the charm of the Hermitage of San Domenico in Villalago in the province of L'Aquila, a hidden treasure among the fascinating Abruzzo mountains. This peaceful and spiritual oasis stands on the shores of the lake that bears its name. Its origins date back to the year 1000 and legend has it that it was San Domenico himself who dug the cave in the sandstone rock with his own hands.

Reaching the hermitage is an adventure by itself: you cross a picturesque dam connecting the shores of the lake, whose crystal-clear waters reflect the breathtaking landscape of the surrounding mountains. The small church, dating from the 15th century, is a jewel of simplicity and beauty, with a portico adorned by a 16th-century mullioned window and frescoes depicting the saint's miracles.

Inside, the neo-Gothic altar, the fresco of the Madonna and Child and the wooden statue of St Dominic welcome the visitor into an atmosphere of peace and contemplation.

The hermitage is also the ideal starting point for exploring the Lake San Domenico Nature Reserve. Take a walk along the paths winding through woods and meadows, enjoying spectacular views and exploring the local flora and fauna.
