Lake Scanno

Romantic atmospheres in the ‘heart’ of Abruzzo

With its distinctive ‘heart’ shape and pristine beauty, Lake Scanno (in the province of L'Aquila) is a natural jewel that catches the eye and touches the soul. This enchanting destination, formed in prehistoric times by a landslide, is the largest natural lake in the region and one of the most picturesque in Italy.

Its unique shape, visible from a special viewpoint along the ‘Sentiero del Cuore’ ("Path of the Heart"), makes it a perfect setting for romantic getaways. The lake is surrounded by a breathtaking mountain landscape, with the peaks of the Marsicani Mountains reflected in its crystal-clear waters. The lake is home to a variety of fishes, including trout, pike, carp and rudd, while its surface is inhabited by various species of birds such as mallards, wild ducks, herons and hawks.

For lovers of nature and the outdoors, Lake Scanno is an ideal destination, offering activities such as hiking, cycling, fishing and canoeing. Those in search of relaxation can relax on the scenic beaches along its shores, immersing themselves in the peaceful environment.

Beyond its natural beauty, the lake is also a site of historical and cultural relevance. On the south-western shore, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Lake, dating back to 1702, can be reached on foot via two small staircases or by boat. The chapel remains an important place of devotion for the locals, with an annual celebration held on 25 March.

A visit to Lake Scanno would not be complete without exploring the picturesque medieval village of Scanno, recognised as one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in Italy’ and awarded with the ‘Orange Flag’ by the Touring Club.

Strolling through its enchanting alleys, small squares and noble palaces, visitors can discover goldsmiths' workshops and traditional bobbin lace-making, precious crafts that reflect the village's rich craft heritage.
