The traditions of San Biagio

Rituals blending the Sacred and the Profane

Have you ever tasted the ‘taralli’ of San Biagio? These tasty treats, particularly popular in the Pescara area, are not only delicious but also a central part of the celebrations in honour of the saint whose name they bear.

This annual celebration, dedicated to the patron saint of gluttony that takes place every 3 February, brings together faith, tradition and community, offering moments of deep spirituality and conviviality. During religious services, ‘taralli’ are blessed so that the faithful can share them with friends and family as a sign of protection.

Another relevant Abruzzo tradition linked to the saint is the saying ‘For San Biagio, the Mitrato, the cold is gone’, recited in mountain and rural areas as a wish for the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

This sentiment has inspired various celebrations throughout Abruzzo, mixing the sacred and the profane, food and faith, all focused on the sweet, savoury ring-shaped cakes that are an essential part of the celebration.
