A Journey Through Hills and Vineyards

If you love cycling and long to discover the authentic side of Abruzzo, Route 1A of the Via delle colline e dei vigneti is a journey made for you. Beginning at the railway station in Francavilla al Mare, this route leads you through a landscape of rolling hills, offering sweeping views that stretch from the mountains to the coastline.

Your journey sets off in Francavilla al Mare (CH), a vibrant seaside town known for its golden beaches and lively promenade – once a beloved gathering place for artists and intellectuals. From here, the path guides you into the tranquil countryside, towards Miglianico (CH), a picturesque town surrounded by vineyards and known for its wine production. Continuing on, you will reach Canosa Sannita (CH) and Arielli (CH), both honoured as Città del Vino, where you can savour the region’s winemaking tradition and sample some of Abruzzo’s finest wines.

The route then carries you to Poggiofiorito (CH), a delightful hilltop village where sweeping panoramic views over the valley below unfolds before you. From this natural balcony, the peaks of the majestic Abruzzo mountains rise on one side, while the blue horizon of the Adriatic Sea stretches out on the other – a striking contrast that makes this stop truly unforgettable.

Your ride comes to an end in Lanciano (CH), a city steeped in history and culture, world-renowned for the Eucharistic Miracle. With its beautifully preserved old town, vibrant atmosphere and timeless charm, Lanciano offers the perfect blend of ancient traditions and modern life.

Though the route features frequent climbs and descents – with some stretches that can be quite demanding – every effort is rewarded by the extraordinary beauty of the landscape and the unmistakable authenticity ot the places you encounter along the way. So, prepare your bike and let the rolling hills and vineyards of the Chieti province enchant you!
