Riserva Regionale dei Calanchi
Cycling Through Authentic Villages and Spectacular Natural Landscapes
Get ready to discover the magic of Abruzzo, cycling between the sea and rolling hills, through authentic villages and breathtaking scenery. This circular route starts from Pineto along the coast, gradually rising towards Mutignano, a charming village set in an incredible landscape with stunning views over the Adriatic Sea.
But this is just the beginning of a cycling journey that will take you to Atri, a town rich in history and architectural wonders, and to the majestic natural formations of the Riserva Naturale Regionale dei Calanchi.
Atri welcomes you with the magnificent Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta and the municipal theatre, two architectural gems facing each other in the central square. Yet the real surprise lies in the Calanchi.
Formed by the erosion of wind and water on clay soils, these striking formations – also called “Dantean pits” or “scrimoni” – are a natural masterpiece. The deep vertical grooves reveal numerous marine fossils, telling stories of a distant past. This unique landscape is so extraordinary that it has been designated a Regional Nature Reserve, protecting and highlighting the biodiversity and beauty of the area.
The route from Pineto to Atri is ideal for cyclists of all levels, combining coastal stretches with gentle hill climbs. Each stage of the journey offers a new delight: from the relaxed atmosphere of Pineto and Mutignano to the historic charm of Atri and the spectacular Calanchi. An experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the nature and culture of Abruzzo in a truly unique and engaging way.
