Val Vibrata
Cycling through the Hills of Teramo
Explore the rolling hills of Teramo on a moderately challenging cycling route that perfectly combines nature, history, and culture. The adventure begins in Alba Adriatica, one of the “seven pearls” of the Costa Giardino, a stretch of Abruzzo’s coastline famed for its fine sandy beaches and warm, welcoming atmosphere.
The route then winds inland, taking you through several medieval villages nestled among the lush vineyards of the Val Vibrata. The first stop is Colonnella, a charming hilltop village near the Tronto River, set against breathtaking scenery stretching from the Monti Sibillini to the Gran Sasso and Maiella massifs.
Next, you will arrive at Controguerra, a delightful village renowned for its wine production. Amid vineyards and olive groves, you can savour the authenticity of local produce and soak in the tranquillity of the Abruzzo countryside.
Continuing on, the enchanting village of Torano Nuovo awaits, with its well-preserved historic centre and numerous wineries offering local wine tastings. This hidden gem provides some of the most picturesque and captivating views in the Teramo province, surrounded by valleys and hills dotted with charming farmhouses and thriving vineyards.
The journey comes to an end in Sant’Omero, home to the historic Chiesa di Santa Maria a Vico. Built on the remains of a Roman temple dedicated to Hercules, it is one of the oldest churches in Abruzzo, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich religious heritage.
