Lago di Barrea

The Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise safeguards this gem of crystal-clear water, set among the peaks of the Monti Marsicani and the majestic Monte Greco. Covering an area of 300 hectares and stretching around 5 kilometres, the Lago di Barrea, created by the damming of the Sangro River in 1952, has evolved into a rich and fascinating ecosystem, beloved by hikers, birdwatchers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Its shores are home to the picturesque villages of Barrea, Civitella Alfedena and Villetta Barrea, connected by trails and cycle paths winding through nature. Here, the landscape alternates between oak, willow and black pine forests, providing perfect refuges for wildlife. The lake is an important resting area for numerous migratory birds, including grebes, herons and mallards, while its waters are home to perch, tench and carp.

Every season offers unique scenery: in summer, you can swim in the cool waters of La Gravara beach or explore the lake by pedal boat, while in winter the snow blankets the landscape, making it ideal for ski touring. Just a few kilometres away, the Lago Vivo and the Lago della Montagna Spaccata provide further opportunities to discover the unspoilt charm of this land.
